Changes afoot in Woodbridge!
Suffolk County Council has announced a “range of improvements” for Woodbridge which, it claims, will make the town centre “safer and easier to get around on foot and on wheel.”
In a release sent to Living In Suffolk magazine, the Council says that “wider pavements, safer crossing points and creating safer junctions are among some of the benefits being proposed by Suffolk County Council following a consultation exercise with residents and businesses.”
The scheme forms part of the £8 million funding awarded to Suffolk County Council by Active Travel England to develop schemes across the county to give people more choice in how they travel for local, shorter journeys.
Wider pavements in Quay Street
The Active Travel Woodbridge project has been split into two phases - South Woodbridge (phase 1), consultation for which was completed in early 202 , and Woodbridge Town Centre (phase 2).
The town centre consultation took place between November 2024 and January 2025, covering the area around Station Road/Quay Street, The Throughfare, and Market Hill, and saw more than 433 responses received.

Based on feedback from the phase 2 consultation, Suffolk County Council is now reviewing over the next 12 months designs for:
Station Road/Quay Street:
Improve the crossing on Station Road and widen pavements on Quay Street
Improve pedestrian safety and accessibility on Quay Street
Consider pavement improvements on Cumberland Street and Church Street
The Throughfare:
Maintenance of current footways
Improve the layout and pavements at the entrance to The Throughfare
Improved signage to clearly highlight the existing vehicle restrictions
Market Hill:
One-way traffic flow for traffic traveling across Market Hill towards Theatre Street
Add bike parking and greenery and improvements to outside spaces
Councillor Alexander Nicoll, Suffolk County Council Deputy Cabinet Member for Transport Strategy, says: “I welcome the thorough public consultation which has helped shape these proposals.
“The consultation response was substantial, with many people taking the trouble to complete the consultation form. The Suffolk County Council Active Travel team have also engaged with local businesses and key local stakeholders including Woodbridge Town Council.
“I would like to put on record my thanks for the contribution made by Woodbridge County Councillor Ruth Leach, who has approached all the issues with care and attention and helped ensure that all voices have been heard during the consultation process.”
