A Moving conversation between Suffolk artists ...
Moving An Exhibition by Fin Saunders & Jimmy Hutch in Woodbridge …
HUTCH: Fin, why did you pick 'Moving' for the title of the exhibition?
FIN: I picked the name because I felt like it was a good connection between mine and your work.
HUTCH: How so?
FIN: Your work has always changed over the years, or at least that is what I have observed... and in my work, along with the fact it features a lot of arrows, I tend to gravitate towards fate, and life’s changeable direction regarding events in my personal life. I like to think of my paintings as a bit of a conduit for me to process things, especially through the human face and body.
HUTCH: I can understand that, especially the bit about painting being a conduit... for me painting has always been a kind of litmus test for how I understand the world.
FIN: What do you mean?
HUTCH: Well it's idiosyncratic logic and I'd be the first to admit that it's full of contradictions. But I have felt at times when I am drawn towards creating more abstract passages of paint I am in effect somehow acknowledging that I don't understand the world around me. I cease to be able to render figurative marks because I seem to lack the understanding to do so. Conversely figurative elements emerge when new internal insight arises. The figuration is the fruit of episodic epiphanies.
FIN: That makes sense. I have said a few times to people, that although I draw and paint all different types of people, everything that I portray, is a self-portrait in a way. As my self moves forward so does my facility for portraying others. Looking back on my work I also like to use both realistic and abstract elements to convey thought.
HUTCH: I can see that balance, and I can also see the interplay between line and colour which has been a preoccupation for me too.
FIN: Have you ever considered that abstract elements appear in your work not because you can’t understand, but because the world is incomprehensible at times, maybe particularly now.
HUTCH: I think yes that probably is the case.
