A SIGHT TO BEHOLD!

SNOWDROPS GALORE!

Jane Bastow once again throws open her wonderful garden in St James South Elmham to the public with a heart-warming glimpse of snowdrops, hellebores and other early gems.

Jane says, “ Whatever the weather, come and enjoy the garden along with hot drinks, cakes, hot soup and crusty bread (gluten free available on request).”

Tickets cost £4 Adults and 50p for Children In aid of St Elizabeth Hospice. Here, Jane has written a few words about the delight she gets from seeing these early flowers:

“Through the darker days at the end of the year, we wait with baited breather for the first flowers to emerge from the cold soil … the Snowdrops.

They give such joy to the start of the year, their pure white flowers showing against the earth and with little competition.

They look so fragile when the frosts (and this year) the snow prostrates them on the ground, but all is not lost for when the temperature rises, and the snow clears, they lift their heads as is to say “we were only resting!”

They lift our hearts and give such hope that better times are coming – but a really special time to see them is in the bright moonlight, when all you can see are the nodding purity of their heads stretching away into the darkness.

Not only a pleasure to us, but to the bees that dare to venture out so early looking for food, bending the heads of the snowdrops with their weight. Truly a giver of life in the harsh, cold short days. As they mingle with the Hellebores the garden becomes a sight to behold.”

  • Open Garden at The Laburnums, St James South Elmham Suffolk, IP19 0HN on Sunday 22nd February 2026 11am to 4pm
